Podcast #72: The ups and downs of setting up your own financial advice business. With Chartered Financial Planner, Jack Mason-Brown

IFA Talk podcast

For any financial planner, it’s never an easy thing to do to make the bold move of breaking away from an advice firm and role you’ve been in for a while and putting in the huge amount of time and effort that it takes to get your own new financial advice business up and running.

On this podcast, Sue and Brandon talk to Jack Mason-Brown from Mason-Brown Financial Planning who has done just that. Jack set up his business in 2023 partnering with St. James’s Place Wealth Management after starting his career at NFU Mutual.

Jack explains the journey that led him to branch out on his own and how his drive, passion, and desire to offer a holistic approach and the best outcomes to his clients, were key considerations in his decision.

He gives an insight into some of the challenges he has faced, from building his client bank, putting in the hours required and going through periods of trial and error to find the right balance for him.

He rounds things off with his highlights and top tips, including the satisfaction that comes from seeing the connection between the hours you work and the outcomes you get. As well as the flexibility he now has to create more of a work-life balance that supports him and his family.

He thinks staying positive and saying yes to opportunities that come along were some of the main lessons he has learned and the things that are helping him make his new business a great success.
